Small Ensembles

 «

 »

Chamber Groups: You will be placed into chamber ensembles according to your playing level. (Pre-formed ensembles are welcome. Just inform us of the members in your group.) You will rehearse and receive coaching daily, and will have an opportunity to participate in a masterclass and possibly perform at the end of the camp. Foundations and Basic Track participants will recieve small group instruction tailored to their level rather than chamber groups.

General Track participants have a few other options to choose from besides traditional chamber groups:

Sectionals: If you prefer more time on the orchestra music, you may opt to sign up for orchestra sectionals (practice sessions by section) instead of a chamber group.

NEW! Groove Ensemble: Small ensembles for both General and Performance Track participants. Select in lieu of chamber group or sectionals. In 2009 it was led by Robert Gardner and Kyle Bultman. The groove ensemble is a creative ensemble in which we’ll explore the possibilities of a few groove-based styles, such as contemporary fiddle, baroque, rock, & jazz. We’ll do some improvising (no experience necessary), reading, listening, and playing by ear. Get your musical creative juices flowing, and have a great time in the process!

Orchestras

 «

 »

If you select the General Track, you will get to play with the Scor-chestra. If you participate in the Performance Track, you will have the opportunity to play more challenging music in the Chamber Orchestra. In either group, you'll learn some beautiful string orchestra music, focus on making a good section sound, and enhance your ensemble skills and musicality. If you participate in the Basic Track, you'll enjoy the Basic Ensemble that will leave you swimming, not sinking.

Sessions

 «

 »

A few afternoons during the camp you will have the opportunity to attend your choice of sessions, such as...

Technique Sessions: Topics may include vibrato, tone production, bow strokes, shifting, thumb position, and more. String teachers, come to get ideas for your own teaching. Amatuer players, work with teachers experienced in adult instruction and open up a new world of possibilities in your playing!

General Sessions: These have included topics such as music theory, basic improvisation, instrument care & maintenance, use of technology, and the like.

Playing Sessions:

The Cello Ensemble meets only twice, but is extremely popular amongst SCOR! cellists! Have fun playing 3-6 part cellos-only music with 25+ cellists! Directed by Sandra Halleran.

Fiddle Sessions (with options for all the instruments, not just violins) are also popular. Highlights through the last few years have included Basic Fiddling, Old-Time, Irish, Scottish, Original, and more.

Special Events

Learn some useful chamber music tips and work with Brian Hodges in a Chamber Music Masterclass.

Wonderful chamber music will be performed by piano faculty Betsi Hodges and the rest of your faculty. Don’t pass up these opportunities!

Play the Viola!

 «

 »

NEW! Viola for Violinists: A Pre-camp program for General or Performance Track participants.

Viola for Violinists is a special opportunity to gain proficiency at the viola by immersion learning and instruction. Many of you may frequently encounter situations where more violists are needed, either in an orchestra or in your chamber group. We're here to help you solve that dilemma. No viola? No problem—just rent one from SCOR!. You’ll get special pre-camp instruction to get you started plus another session the next day. You'll play viola in an orchestra, and can opt to also play it in a small ensemble. We’ll address tone production, bowing, holding the instrument, sight reading, and of course, the dreaded alto clef!
